British Craft Trade Fair organiser, Margeret Bunn, explains why the UK craft scene is going from strength to strength

Margeret Bunn has been running the British Craft Trade Fair for more than 25 years, and is responsible for selecting its diverse range of exhibitors. She has worked with some of the UK's most talented designer-makers and has seen the modern craft industry go from strength to strength in recent times.

Would you say the British craft industry is flourishing at the moment?

The industry has grown enormously over the past few years, with the 2011 royal wedding, 2012 Olympics and Golden Jubilee all helping to raise the profile of British design-led giftware. Buyers also understand that their customers are becoming more discerning, and this is where British handmade excels in offering unique and affordable products that not everyone will have.

Is 'made in Britain' a good selling point?

The UK has produced good and outstanding quality products, not only in its industrial past but also today. Modern crafters have a passion for producing giftware that is both beautiful and practical. These designers and makers can also change and adapt their work to meet the demands of the current economic climate and design preferences, which is not so easy with items that are mass-produced.

Are today's craft producers better placed to supply the trade than in the past?

At the British Craft Trade Fair, we pride ourselves not only for showcasing the hundreds of amazing British designers working in the UK today, but also for our comprehensive mentoring program, which ensures that all our makers are ready and able to supply trade orders. The next British Craft Trade Fair takes place from 7-9th April 2019.
