UK Hand Knitting (UKHK), the leading organisation championing yarn crafts across the country, has announced the launch of its first comprehensive consumer research study into the UK knitting and crochet market. This landmark project will deliver unprecedented insight into how today’s makers discover, purchase, and engage with yarn and craft products. The full research findings will be published later this year, with a detailed report available to all UK Hand Knitting premium subscribing shops.

· Purchasing habits — what products consumers buy, how often, and how they make decisions
· Where they shop — from local yarn shops and craft chains to online retailers and marketplaces
· Media engagement — the role of social media, influencers, magazines, blogs, and online communities
· Skill levels and learning journeys — how beginners enter the craft and how experienced makers continue to develop
The research aims to provide a clear, data-driven picture of the modern yarn-craft landscape, supporting retailers, brands, designers, and educators in better serving the needs of the UK's vibrant crafting community.

The findings will help shape future initiatives, support the sustainability of local yarn shops, and UK Hand Knitting is asking yarn shops to encourage their customers to take part.
UK Hand Knitting will invite knitters and crocheters of all ages and skill levels to participate in the study through an online survey and targeted outreach across social media, craft events, and partner organisations.
The full research findings will be published later this year, with a detailed report available to all UK Hand Knitting premium subscribing shops.
The survey will open on 1st September 2026 and will close on 16th October. It is open to all ages and abilities so simply follow this link https://shorturl.at/QRFlB to take part or keep an eye on @ukhandknitting. If you aren't already a premium yarn shop with UK Hand Knitting, sign up here.
