The Association for Cultural Enterprises is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Griffiths as its new Chief Executive. Paul brings almost 30 years’ leadership experience across the heritage, museums, and cultural attractions sector, with a strong record of transformation, income diversification, and enterprise growth. Most recently he was CEO in the UAE, overseeing the flagship historic site of Al Jazeera Al Hamra and developing innovative enterprise programmes with international partners.

Paul Griffiths headshot Prior to that, Paul was Director of Painshill Park Trust, where he led the charity through a period of financial turnaround, audience growth, and strategic investment. Earlier in his career, he held senior leadership roles with English Heritage, managing a 12-site London portfolio including Kenwood House and Eltham Palace, and with the Mary Rose Trust for six years, managing the opening and then running of the new award-winning museum.

Alongside his executive roles, Paul has held a number of trustee and advisory positions across the cultural sector and has been a guest lecturer and speaker on cultural enterprise, leadership, and strategy. He has contributed to sector-wide discussions on financial sustainability, audience engagement, and the future of cultural enterprise, underlining his commitment to thought leadership and to helping organisations adapt and thrive.

Paul said: "I feel honoured to be taking up the role of Chief Executive at the Association for Cultural Enterprises at such a pivotal time for the sector. Having worked across the heritage and cultural sector for many years, I know how important the Association is as a source of support, innovation, and advocacy. Throughout my career, I have championed the integration of cultural purpose and commercial innovation, and I believe deeply in the power of cultural enterprise to deliver resilience, connection, and creativity. Cultural enterprise is not a bolt-on, but a necessity if organisations are to be financially sustainable and deliver lasting public value. The Association for Cultural Enterprises is uniquely placed to shape a more entrepreneurial, inclusive, and future-ready cultural sector, and I can't wait to connect with members, work with the team and trustees, and build on the fantastic work already achieved to help cultural organisations flourish."

Melanie Lewis, Chair of Trustees said: "We are delighted to welcome Paul Griffiths as Chief Executive of the Association for Cultural Enterprises. Paul brings a wealth of experience, fresh ideas, and a proven ability to lead through change and growth. His understanding of the sector, combined with his strong relationships across our partners, members, and stakeholders, will ensure the Association continues to support and champion cultural enterprises at this critical time. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I also want to thank the team for all their excellent work and especially to Tom Dawson for his outstanding leadership as Interim COO over the past four months."
Paul will formally take up the role on 22nd September 2025.
