9 INDUSTRY NEWS Industry news Latest news from the craft industry  Creativeworld Trends go on tour The Creativeworld Trends 2026 are going global: following their debut at the world’s leading trade fair Creativeworld in Frankfurt in early February 2026. The trend worlds curated by Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano – modern romantics, new rebels and cool classics – will now be showcased on selected industry platforms worldwide, bringing creative impulses to key consumer goods markets. The tour will kick off at Hobby-X in South Africa, followed by Paperworld India. The roadshow made its debut at Hobby-X in Johannesburg. Subsequently, a presentation is set to take place at Paperworld India in Delhi (30th July to 1st August 2026). Further planned stops include Paperworld Middle East in Dubai and Paperworld China in Shanghai. Bringing materials, techniques and products together, Creativeworld Trends 2026 reveal coherent creative concepts. In Frankfurt, the three trend worlds were presented as a curated exhibition, with clear design statements and tangible application examples for the industry. “The Creativeworld Trends bring curated creative inspiration to further international markets and make their mark on strong regional industry platforms worldwide. In combination with events such as Hobby-X, this generates relevant inspiration that offers trade visitors tangible approaches to product ranges and product presentation,” says Julia Uherek, Vice President Consumer Goods Fairs. The trends were curated by Claudia Herke from Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano, who, together with her team, analysed international developments in art, design and DIY – and translated them into inspiring applications. The three style worlds – modern romantics, new rebels and cool classics – bring together different creative approaches in a multifaceted overall picture: from poetic, craft-driven detail to experimental, material-led techniques and clear, graphic reinterpretations of classics. For the retail trade, the trends offer practical guidance: they show how products and materials can be combined into compelling product stories. This makes them a valuable tool for visual merchandising and impactful in-store presentation. The international rollout of the Creativeworld Trends highlights the strength of Messe Frankfurt’s global network. As part of the Conzoom Circle, the global network for lifestyle goods, the trend presentations are strategically placed at selected international events, reaching new target groups in key growth markets. At the same time, the selected exhibitors benefit from increased international visibility, as their products – featured within the curated trend displays – connect with new audiences and open up additional business opportunities. Next trade fair dates: Creativeworld will continue to take place at the same time as Ambiente and Christmasworld at the Frankfurt exhibition centre. The Compass Talks will once again kick off the events on the day before, 28th January 2027.

10 2025 GOLDEN SCISSORS AWARDS RECOGNISE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN THE CRAFTS INDUSTRY Craft Industry Alliance today announced the winners of the 2026 Golden Scissors Awards, honouring exceptional achievement and leadership across the crafts industry. The awards were presented live on stage at h+h Americas at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Centre in Rosemont, Illinois, where five outstanding craft professionals were recognised before an audience of industry peers. Spanning global brands and independent makers alike, the craft industry thrives on innovation, creativity, and community. The Golden Scissors Awards celebrate individuals whose work elevates the field and drives it forward. Nominations opened in January and remained open for one month, with finalists subsequently reviewed by a panel of seven judges appointed by the Craft Industry Alliance Board of Advisors. Judges for this year’s awards were Arianna Foulks of the web design and development agency Aeolidia, activist and author Omkari Williams, founder and COO of SewShare Julie Roehm, founder and host of The Quilter on Fire Podcast Brandy Maslowski, crochet designer Brittany Garber, entrepreneur and investor Elizabeth Caven, and the publisher, editor, and designer of UPPERCASE Magazine, Janine Vangool. There were five categories of awards given this year: Emerging Leader, Innovation, Sustainability, Social Impact, and Lifetime Achievement. For Social Impact, the award goes to someone whose work focuses on participation, craft, and collective storytelling. She is the creator of Welcome Blanket, a participatory project where thousands of makers create handmade textiles and messages of welcome for refugees and immigrants. The blankets are exhibited at museums and cultural institutions and then gifted through over 30 partner organisations. She’s also the co-creator of the Pussyhat Project, which helped bring craftivism into the cultural mainstream. The award goes to Jayna Zweiman. For Innovation, the award goes to someone who created a training platform to teach people how to service, maintain, and understand sewing machines. Recognising a growing shortage of qualified sewing machine technicians and limited access to technical training, she created Sewing Doc Academy to make professional-level education accessible to anyone with the curiosity and determination to learn. Before launching the Academy, she operated a professional sewing machine service shop for 15 years in the Atlanta suburbs, where she serviced and restored machines for sewists throughout the region. The award goes to Andi Barney. For Sustainability, the award goes to a non-profit in Nashville that is keeping thousands of pounds of art supplies out of landfills and giving them a second life with artists, teachers, and students ready to create. They offer meaningful work to adults with disabilities, helping them to build job skills, gain confidence, and connect with community, while encouraging everyone to explore their creative side. The award goes to Smart Art and Craft Supplies. For Emerging Leader, the award goes to someone who served as the Executive Director of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, where she supported thousands of quilters in providing comfort to veterans. Prior to this, she served as Executive Director of the Yeiser Art Center in Paducah, Kentucky, where she oversaw and expanded a fiber festival. This is a person who’s passionate about arts education and teaches art at Caldwell County Middle School in Princeton, Kentucky, a role that allows her to inspire the next generation to discover and develop their own artistic voices, fostering creativity and confidence. The award goes to Lexie Millikan. For Lifetime Achievement, the award goes to a nationally recognised fibre artist, curator, and educator who is a 4th generation needleworker based in Goose Creek, South Carolina. She’s dedicated more than two decades to preserving, expanding, and elevating African American textile traditions, particularly Gullah Rag Quilting. She honors the ancestral practice of Gullah Rag Quilting while thoughtfully adapting it to contemporary makers, ensuring its survival as a living tradition. The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Torreah ‘Cookie’ Washington. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners. Craft Industry Alliance co-founder and president, Abby Glassenberg, says of this year’s awards program, “It’s a privilege to present these awards. In just three years, the program has become a highlight for us. The dedication and effort shown by this year’s winners is remarkable, and each one demonstrates the powerful impact of craft and creativity.” The Golden Scissors Awards will be given annually each spring at h+h americas. Nominations for next year’s awards will open in January 2027.

11 INDUSTRY NEWS King’s Speech 2026 reaction Small Business Britain is the UK’s leading champion of small businesses, supporting the UK’s 5.7 million small businesses, no matter their location, their sector, or their ambition level. Through a series of campaigns, networks, training and reports, Small Business Britain champions and informs small businesses in the UK. Committed to making entrepreneurship as inclusive as possible, it brings small business owners together to foster growth and increased confidence. On 13th May 2026 King Charles outlined government legislative agenda in the King’s Speech. Michelle Ovens CBE, CEO and Founder of Small Business Britain gives her thoughts. “We welcome the King’s Speech for its support in strengthening trading relations with the European Union. The UK is home to 5.7 million small businesses, all with ambitions to broaden their horizons, and strong international trade relationships are essential to maintaining the UK’s reputation as a leader in cultivating wealth, whilst upholding our commitment to an open economy. The Government’s continued focus on young people across Britain is equally important. The next generation is ambitious, versatile, and adaptable, and by equipping young people with business skills, entrepreneurial pathways, and strong role models before they leave education, we can help ensure every young person feels empowered to break down barriers and succeed. In doing so, we can build a stronger economy that thrives on opportunity, innovation, and a more level playing field. It is also encouraging to see the Government strengthen the late payment legislation, a vital step in helping entrepreneurs maintain financial stability and continue growing their operations.” Martine Mussies YARN-BOMBED POST BOXES MARK SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH’S 100TH BIRTHDAY This May, red post boxes across the UK were transformed into colourful crochet tributes to British wildlife, marking Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. Launched by Hobbycraft, the nationwide ‘yarn bombing’ campaign saw handcrafted toppers appearing in key locations linked to Sir David’s life – from his current hometown of London to Cambridge, where he studied, and Leicester, where he grew up, as well as Edinburgh, Manchester, Bournemouth and Glasgow; turning everyday street furniture into joyful celebrations of nature. Each topper featured detailed scenes inspired by British wildlife, including bees, squirrels, and woodland habitats, designed to delight passers-by and spark conversations about the natural world. The postbox topper installations were created by Hobbycraft’s Knitcraft expert Natalie Beard @sewing_the_seeds_of_love, who said: “Each topper is a celebration of Sir David’s incredible legacy and the wildlife he’s spent his life championing. We hope they inspire people to get creative and connect with nature.” At the end of May, the toppers were donated or auctioned to raise funds for environmental charities. Crafters of all abilities were encouraged to create their own nature-inspired pieces and share them using #MakeWithHobbycraft, with selected entries winning prizes and being showcased online. Hobbycraft has released FREE patterns, including a Sir David Attenborough amigurumi crochet doll and downloadable naturethemed templates, making it easy for anyone to get involved.

Stephens Convention Centre in Rosemont, Illinois, welcoming more than 12,556 visitors and establishing an immediate and meaningful presence within the North American craft market. The event featured 276 companies from eight nations across 4,182 sqm of exhibit space, delivering a curated, experience-driven environment where education, artistry, and commerce came together to serve today’s maker. Held 1st to 3rd May 2026, the Festival introduced a new model for consumer craft events rooted in participation, creativity, and community engagement at scale. “The successful debut of the Fiber+Fabric Craft Festival reflects Koelnmesse’s commitment to extending our global leadership in the handicraft sector into every layer of the market. By creating a dedicated consumer platform alongside our B2B trade events, we are building an ecosystem that serves makers, brands, and the industry at every stage - and reinforcing the United States as a strategic pillar of our worldwide portfolio.” Says Gerald Böse, President & CEO, Koelnmesse GmbH. A Highly Engaged Audience The Festival demonstrated strong consumer demand and deep engagement across all programme areas. More than 7,270 unique registered attendees generated approximately 12,556 ticket-days, exceeding attendance targets by 205 percent. Multi-day participation proved especially important. Three-day attendees represented a significant share of total time spent on site, reinforcing the value of immersive, multi-day programming. A Show Floor Built for Discovery The Festival floor was designed as an experiential journey, blending retail, education, and inspiration through curated exhibits and community-driven spaces - from landmark installations and designer spotlights to hands-on makeand-take stations and community pavilions for niche craft communities. Education at the Core With more than 200 classes and over 100 instructors, the Festival delivered one of the most comprehensive educational programs in the consumer craft market - spanning quilting, sewing, crochet, cosplay, embroidery, design, and craft business development, with programming calibrated for every skill level. Connecting Consumer and Trade Positioned directly ahead of h+h americas, the Festival established a clear connection between the consumer and professional sides of the industry. The back-to-back format created a seamless continuum - allowing brands to engage passionate makers and shoppers at FFCF before transitioning directly into the B2B environment of h+h americas, and establishing Rosemont as a week-long destination for the global creative community. “The response to the inaugural Fiber+Fabric Craft Festival exceeded our targets by 205 percent and validated what we’ve believed from the start: the North American creative community is ready for a consumer event built with the same caliber, scale, and intentionality as a world-class trade show. Pairing FFCF with h+h americas in back-to-back weeks has positioned Rosemont as the definitive destination for the creative industry in the US.” Said, Darrin Stern, Managing Director, Koelnmesse Inc. Building for the Future The debut edition provides a strong foundation for continued growth, with clear opportunities to expand programming, increase participation, and refine the experience. The 2027 edition returns to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Centre 30th April to 2nd May, 2027, with conference programming beginning 29th April, once again preceding h+h americas (5th-7th May 2027) to continue the consumer-to-trade continuum. “Launching a consumer festival of this scale from the ground up is no small undertaking, and the energy we saw on the show floor made clear this community is ready to grow with us. For 2027, our focus is on deepening designer partnerships, expanding hands-on programming, and introducing new pavilions in the categories with real momentum - needlepoint, spinning, weaving, and cosplay among them. FFCF is here to stay, and we’re just getting started.” Said Jessica Boweak, Show Director, Koelnmesse North American Handicraft Portfolio.
