41 COMPANY PROFILE NUTSCENE TWINES LTD sales@nutscene.com www.nutscene.com www.nutscene-wholesale.com Tell us a little bit about the company. Where are you based? When did the company start? We’re a small business based in the County of Angus in Scotland; we operate from a small factory where we still produce our core twines. Our machinery dates back to early 1900’s and the brand was established in Dundee around 1922, where it was a spin off from the jute industries which dominated the city. The twines were originally developed as garden twines. The green twine when tied around plants was ‘not seen’, it became a patented product called Nutscene®. Who founded the company and why? I became involved in the business in 1988, and I’m the Finder Keeper, owner of the company. I joined the company as office manager, became production manager, general manger, director, now CEO How has the company evolved? In the year 2000, we introduced two new colours of twine, this has now grown to 24 colours, including neon coloured twines. The craft market was opening up to us and developing, Nutscene was a supplier to Hobbycraft stores for many years where the brand was gathering an avid following of crafters and makers. The range expanded with the introduction of macrame twines, candy twines and raffia. We export our products to more than 17 Countries. In Japan our products are used mostly for crafts, where crochet is popular, many fashion bags are produced using our twines. The USA is currently our largest export market, followed by Australia, Japan, then Europe. Our Raffia is used by fashion designers, used for weaving and basket making and its popularity and uses are increasing every year. We now offer 32 shades with some new colours being introduced later this year. What do you specialise in? Twine and raffia. We love it and so do our customers! Talk us through the current products you’re particularly excited about. Do you have a favourite? I love to work with colours, introducing new hues to the market. I have to say I love all our products, of course! Hobby & crafts have boomed over the last two years! Have you noticed any new trends? I feel that customers are much more engaged and want to know everything about our products, in terms of sustainability, origin and processes with a huge emphasis on the environment. Nutscene removed the bulk of plastic from our products 20 years ago, with a few remaining items protected in recycled or compostable bags. How would you advise a retailer who is interested in stocking your products? We operate a trade website: www.nutscene-wholesale.com Please request to become a stockist, where we review and check for exclusivity. What sets you apart from your competitors? We’re a small business and still make products in this country. Do you visit any trade shows? Do you plan to visit any soon? We’re busy preparing for our 20th year at the RHS Chelsea Flower show. Last year, we were awarded the Director Generals Award for our stand and products. A proud moment. We’ve exhibited at trade shows across the world, but our next show will be Spring Fair, in Birmingham 2027. What are you looking forward to most over the next year? Continuing to develop our business at every level. What new products can we expect from you in the future? We will develop more colours across our ranges and some unique offerings for the craft market.
