Craft Focus - June/July 2026 (Issue 115)

69 INTERVIEW my surroundings in Cornwall. I love including lots of texture in my work and experimenting with new tools and glazes. I use a combination of hand building and wheel thrown pieces. For a newbie, how do they get started? Find a potter local to you or an art retreat to try your hand at as many things as you can. Try both hand building and throwing on the wheel. Don’t expect to get it right away but enjoy the journey! What tools and materials do you recommend? There aren’t many places close to me in Cornwall to buy supplies but I love going to Potclays in Stoke-on-Trent. I could spent hours in there looking at shelves if glazes and tools. I especially love Mudtools and Diamondcore tools for throwing. And most glazes on my pieces are from the Amaco Potters choice range, my favourite being the River Rock & Honeyflux combo What tips would you give to someone wanting to try their hand at pottery? Just do it! Throw yourself into it! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never done anything creative in your life, just give in a chance, it really is the best! What does the next 12 months look like for you? My tattooing has taken a bit of a backseat as I’m in my pottery studio most of the week making pieces. I recently went back to Gladstone, where TGPTD was filmed, for their makers market. I have Potfest and a few other markets to attend too. Our B&B is also hosting art retreats covering pottery and printmaking, as well as workshops at my pottery studio. I’m also hoping to setup some local events within Redruth to promote pottery and local potters. Visit: www.fynnmadethis.com
