The summer of ’21

Shops can positively prepare for the months ahead and we have pages packed with product including our Children’s Crafts and Back to School specials ready for those backpack essentials. Preparations are being made for many trade shows this autumn such as Stiches and the London Stationery Show – I do hope to meet many of you there. Latest Craft Report explores pandemic performance in the UK craft industry
 
Early findings from the 2021 Report reveal that about 90 per cent of the 3,000 dedicated crafters surveyed have missed the experience of shopping for craft supplies, both in store and at craft shows. ICHF Events is focusing on new areas of research for its 2021 Craft Report to better understand the impact of the pandemic on the industry and how it can capitalise on any changes in consumer behaviour. The results of the survey will be revealed exclusively at the CHSI Stitches trade show at the NEC, Birmingham in September.

Stephanie Carswell, owner and Creative Director of Hawthorn Handmade, a craft kit design company based in Dorset, has been announced as a finalist for this year's Great British Entrepreneur Awards. Named as one of the South West finalists for 'Creative Industries Entrepreneur of the Year', Stephanie has outshone almost 5000 entries after her organically grown business had its best year ever in 2020.Now in their ninth year, the Great British Entrepreneur Awards have celebrated some incredible entrepreneurs over the years, including the likes of Julie Deane OBE of Cambridge Satchel Co.

Becca Macdonald Studio was born in 2018 out of the basement studio of her home in the world heritage site of Saltaire; which is also known for Salts Mill, a former textile mill now turned art gallery with an extensive collection by David Hockney. Becca Macdonald Studio is a one-woman venture. Although she has now moved out of Saltaire, she continues to create all of her jewellery by hand from the new home studio in west Yorkshire. Becca Macdonald, chats exclusively to Craft Focus about starting her own business and creating personal keepsakes to keep families close at all times.

The GOTS vision is that organic textiles will become a significant part of everyday life, enhancing people's lives and the environment. The GOTS standard stipulates requirements throughout the supply chain for both ecological and labour conditions in textile and apparel manufacturing using organically produced raw materials. Organic production is based on a system of farming that maintains and replenishes soil fertility without the use of toxic, persistent pesticides or synthetic fertilisers.
