Nurge Trade was founded in Istanbul in 1985 with the aim of manufacturing high-quality embroidery and needlework products. The focus has always been on quality, originality and continuous improvement, redesigning and enhancing traditional embroidery tools for modern makers with research and development remaining a key part of the company's approach. Nurge distributes products from its UK warehouse based in Gloucestershire and are passionate about supplying high-quality embroidery and needlework tools to makers, retailers, and wholesalers across the UK. 7 INDUSTRY NEWS Industry news Latest news from the craft industry HOME & GIFT ASSOCIATION MEETS WITH GOVERNMENT The Home & Gift Association has met with the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) to discuss growth, exports, regulation and support for small businesses across the UK’s home and gift sector. Representing around 400 suppliers, manufacturers, retailers and service providers, the Association highlighted the pressures facing businesses, including rising costs, export barriers and increasing regulatory requirements. A key focus of the meeting was international growth, with DBT outlining opportunities for UK businesses through partnerships with major online marketplaces in regions including Latin America and the Middle East. The Association welcomed further collaboration to help members access new customers and export markets. The importance of trade shows as a driver of business growth was also discussed. The Association highlighted the need to attract more international buyers to UK exhibitions, while sharing plans for a new Trade Fair Council to explore ways of reducing participation barriers for smaller businesses, including rising exhibition and operational costs. Regulation was another major topic, with the Association raising concerns around packaging requirements, sustainability legislation and the impact of evolving EU regulations on UK businesses trading internationally. DBT requested further industry evidence to help inform future policy discussions. Government-backed initiatives including the Business Growth Service, Growth Guarantee Scheme, Start Up Loans, British Business Bank finance programmes and Help to Grow: Management were also highlighted as potential sources of support for businesses. Gemma Sault, Managing Director of the Home & Gift Association, said the meeting provided an important opportunity to ensure the experiences of small businesses were being heard by government. The meeting concluded with a commitment to continued dialogue, including further information sharing on regulation, international opportunities, trade events and sector challenges. For the UK’s predominantly small and independent home and gift businesses, the Association says continued engagement with government will be important in helping the sector navigate regulatory pressures while unlocking opportunities for future growth and international trade. The beginner-friendly embroidery kit includes everything needed to create a traditional Christmas stocking and comes with a selection of cat-themed and festive embroidery patterns. Participants can choose from a red or green stocking and personalise their design to create a unique handmade keepsake. “Christmas is a special time for many families and we know that cats are very much part of the celebrations,” said Kayleigh Yeardly from Cats Protection. “Our Embroidery Craftalong offers a wonderful opportunity for people to learn a new skill, create something unique and festive, and support cats in need at the same time. Every kit purchased helps fund our vital work, making a difference to cats and their owners across the UK.” The live online Embroidery Craftalong will take place on Saturday 5th December, with all sessions recorded and available to watch back on demand, allowing crafters to take part at a time that suits them. 8 PENTEL GOES BEHIND THE SCENES OF BREAST CANCER RESEARCH Pentel UK recently visited the Breast Cancer Now Toby Robins Research Centre at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, gaining a fascinating first-hand insight into the pioneering research being carried out. For Pentel and their guest James Taylor, Managing Director at Cardzone - Clintons, the visit provided a valuable opportunity to see behind the scenes at one of the UK’s leading breast cancer research centres and understand more about the impact of the support generated through its 20-year partnership with Breast Cancer Now. Breast Cancer Now supports around 100 scientists at the research centre from many different fields, to change what we know about the disease and how we treat it. Pentel has been a corporate partner of Breast Cancer Now since 2006 and has raised over £1.74 million for the charity through sales of its special edition pink-barrelled EnerGel pen. For every pen sold, Pentel donates £0.25 to Breast Cancer Now. 9 INDUSTRY NEWS RETAILERS RISK LOSING SALES AS 42 PERCENT OF SHOPPERS ABANDON PURCHASES OVER HIDDEN DELIVERY CHARGES More than four in 10 UK shoppers (42 percent) would abandon an online purchase if unexpected delivery costs appeared during checkout, according to new research from digital consultancy Sherwen Studios. This highlights a major commercial risk for retailers ahead of the Black Friday and Christmas shopping season. When asked what (if anything) would make them abandon an online purchase, shoppers most frequently cited unexpected delivery costs at checkout (42 percent), delivery taking too long (31 percent), or an item being out of stock (29 percent). The findings suggest that operational and fulfilment issues are among the most significant factors influencing customers’ decisions about whether to complete an online purchase. Conversely, when asked what would make them more likely to purchase online, the most frequent responses were free or cheaper delivery (45 percent), faster delivery (32 percent), trusted customer reviews (23 percent), clear product images or sizing information (21 percent) and real-time stock availability (20 percent). The findings are published in Sherwen’s latest report, The Omnichannel Illusion: Customers can’t value what they don’t experience, which is based on commissioned research among a nationally representative sample of 2,000 UK consumers aged 18 and over. Sherwen Studios believes that these findings should serve as a warning to retailers preparing for this year’s Black Friday and Christmas sales. Peak trading periods put greater pressure on ecommerce and fulfilment teams, so delivery costs, timescales, stock visibility, and product and returns information must be clear to customers when they decide whether to complete a purchase. Improving transparency at every stage could help retailers reduce cart abandonment rates, build consumer confidence and maximise conversions during the peak trading period. Matt Sherwen, Managing Director of Sherwen Studios, says, “Many retailers will be spending the next few months focusing on promotions, advertising and driving traffic to their online platforms, but our research confirms that customers are walking away for surprisingly simple reasons. During peak trading periods, seemingly small gaps in delivery information could have a major impact on sales.” “We recommend that brands spend the next few weeks reviewing whether delivery costs, timescales, product information and returns policies are visible throughout the customer journey. Small changes to that information could have a greater impact on customer confidence and conversion rates than many retailers realise.” Sherwen Studio’s research gives retailers a practical way to review peak readiness: examine whether information, services, and customer context remain consistent as a journey moves across the website, app, store, and customer service. The full report, The Omnichannel Illusion: Customers can’t value what they don’t experience, explores attitudes towards connected retail, delivery, loyalty, personalisation and AI. It identifies where shopping journeys still feel separate and provides recommendations for making existing omnichannel capabilities more visible to customers. The report can be downloaded here: www.sherwen.com GCA appoints David Falkner as new CEO Following a thorough and considered recruitment process, the GCA interviewed a number of strong candidates, giving the board the opportunity to challenge applicants and carefully assess who would be the right person for the role. David was selected for his first-hand experience of running a publishing business, his previous corporate experience, his understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing smaller businesses, and his strong ambition for the future of the GCA. Having built and run his own publishing business, following an earlier career in the corporate sector, David brings a valuable and well-rounded perspective to the role. He understands the industry not just from an organisational perspective, but as a business owner operating within it, while also bringing experience of working within a larger corporate environment. The board believes this combination of industry knowledge, commercial understanding, corporate experience and fresh thinking makes David the right person to take the GCA forward and build on the strong foundations already in place. David brings something very valuable to the GCA. He understands our industry inside and out: from running a publishing business to championing our members on crucial issues like postal reform. He showed throughout the interview process how seamlessly he can apply that same energy to every area of our association, and we are delighted to have him lead us into this next chapter. David will officially join the GCA on 1st December, working alongside current CEO Amanda Fergusson throughout December to ensure a smooth and comprehensive handover. From 1 January, David will take on the role of CEO in his own right. The GCA looks forward to David joining the team and to the next chapter for the association under his leadership. Thought catalog

14 VAESSEN CREATIVE Designer Marlene Meijer-van Niekerk is partnering with Vaessen Creative on new Art by Marlene collections. The first release is planned for March 2027. The products included in that release will be announced at a later date. For Marlene, choosing a new partner was a careful and personal process. She spoke with several companies, spent considerable time thinking about the future of Art by Marlene and visited Vaessen Creative before making her decision. There she found the combination she was looking for: a professional team that contributes ideas with energy and enthusiasm, room to follow her own creative direction and opportunities to develop new products and make them available through an extensive international distribution network. Ultimately, the feeling was also decisive. The collaboration builds on the colourful, playful and imaginative style that Art by Marlene enthusiasts know. Marlene wants to preserve that recognisable world while making room for new details and products. Art by Marlene is known for products including paper, stamps, cutting dies, embossing products and stencils. In the run-up to the first release, Art by Marlene and Vaessen Creative will share more about the new collections. info@vaessen-creative.com www.vaessen-creative.com BEHRENS GROUP Believe it or not, the Behrens Group is already looking ahead to Christmas 2027! 17 SHOWS & EVENTS AUTUMN FAIR CLOSES WITH RETAILERS ACTING ON NEW OPPORTUNITIES Autumn Fair 2026 closed following four days of buying, discovery and networking at the NEC Birmingham, with feedback from retailers and exhibitors highlighting a more cross-category approach to sourcing, growing demand for distinctive and story-led products, and the continued importance of face-to-face relationships in retail. Across Gift, Home, Fashion and the newly co-located Glee, buyers came from leading retailers including John Lewis, TJX Europe, Fenwick, NEXT, IKEA, Argos, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, The Range, Dobbies, Blue Diamond, British Garden Centres, Natural History Museum, British Museum, ZSL, Royal Shakespeare Company, Hobbycraft, and Scribbler, to name a few. Two shows - a bigger buying opportunity The co-location with Glee emerged as one of the strongest themes of the show, with retailers using the two-day opportunity to combine their Autumn Fair gift, home and fashion buying with garden, outdoor and lifestyle sourcing. For some buyers, the combination has changed the way they approach their buying trip, enabling them to move between categories and make one longer visit work harder. Discovery remains a key driver for buyers While buyers arrived with specific ranges and gaps in mind, conversations across the show demonstrated that discovery remains one of the key reasons retailers value physical trade shows. Claire Bevan, Head of Buying at the Natural History Museum, highlighted the growing importance of distinctive, storyled products and stronger relationships with producers and suppliers. “In the area I buy for, there’s definitely a lot of optimism and I’m seeing more products that are story-led, creative and distinctive. There’s a real focus on going back into the supply chain, working with great producers and suppliers, and creating products that have a strong story behind them. That’s something I’m seeing more and more of every year at Autumn Fair.” Independent retailers drive demand for something different Independent retailers were a consistent presence across the show, with exhibitors reporting strong conversations with boutiques, independents, garden centres and smaller retail groups. Retail Huddle Live: turning insight into action The final day saw Retail Huddle Live take over the Counter Talks Stage, bringing founders and industry experts together for a programme of practical advice, workshops and discussion. The morning covered everything from AI and digital skills to seasonal planning, creator collaborations, visual merchandising, sustainability and winning new retail listings. Among the sessions, Natasha Birk, Head of Product & E-Commerce at FlightStory (The Diary of a CEO), led Unlocking Growth by Obsessing Over the 1%, exploring how small, strategic improvements can unlock growth, while visual merchandising specialist Sarah Manning examined how retailers can use the psychology of customer behaviour to improve displays, store journeys and ecommerce. Partners, experiences and connections The show was supported by headline sponsor TY, alongside a network of partners and activations bringing additional insight and inspiration adding opportunities for buyers to discover products, share ideas, network and make connections throughout the four days. Whatnot’s live commerce activation proved a particularly busy destination, with buyers engaging with the working studio and exploring the opportunities presented by live shopping and community-led commerce. The Gift of the Year Showcase presented an edited selection of standout products and must-have gifts for the year ahead, providing buyers with a quick route to some of the most exciting new launches. The spectrum ranges from Christmas & Seasonal Decoration, Florists’ Requisites & Garden Decorations, Candles, Ribbons & Wrapping, Party & Festive Items and Visual Merchandising & Light to the new Seasonal Gifts & Toys product area. “Celebrations and special occasions remain important drivers of consumer spending, even in a persistently challenging economic environment. Originally scheduled for 13th to 15th October 2026 at Dubai World Trade Centre, the event will now take place from 28th to 30th September 2027. The decision follows extensive discussions with the industry and careful assessment of the challenges currently facing the paper and stationery industry, including constraints around production lead times and issues across freight and logistics. Teresa Heitor, Portfolio Director, Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “We fully recognise the significance of this decision, as Paperworld Middle East plays an important role in bringing the paper and stationery industry together, and we are responsible for ensuring it does so under conditions that enable our exhibitors, partners, and visitors to achieve meaningful results. “After listening to our customers and industry partners, we believe postponing the event is the right decision. Our focus now turns to Paperworld Middle East 2027 and ensuring we provide the strongest possible platform for regional and international participation, sourcing, distribution and longterm commercial partnerships. We remain fully committed to the show and to the businesses and partners that have supported its development over the past 15 editions.” Messe Frankfurt Middle East looks forward to welcoming the industry to Paperworld Middle East in 2027, while continuing to bring the global community together at Beautyworld Dubai and Automechanika Dubai later this year, and at Intersec Global in early 2027. 20 CREATIVEWORLD We take a moment to explore the three new trend worlds you can explore at the upcoming Creativeworld in Frankfurt in February 2027 At home, we cook together, unwind, spend time with family and shape the place where we feel comfortable. This is precisely where Creativeworld Trends 2027 come into play. The design studio bora.herke.palmisano transforms three familiar areas of life – Kitchen Experiences, Balcony Moments and Bedroom Stories – into creative thematic worlds. What they have in common is a focus on objects with personality: repurposed materials, individually handcrafted pieces, familiar patterns and traditional techniques used in a contemporary way. Things made by hand are encouraged to have a deliberately light and experimental feel. “Trends don’t just present themselves to us as abstract colour schemes or styles. They take on a practical dimension in the places where we live and where we choose, use and design the things around us. With ‘Home Sweet Home’, we therefore demonstrate in a very down-to-earth way how materials, techniques and personal items can create atmosphere – in spaces that everyone is familiar with and shapes in their own way.” Says Claudia Herke from the Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano. Trends 2027
1CREATIVITY IS ON THE TABLE The kitchen is both a workspace and a meeting place – and therefore offers plenty of opportunities to rethink what is already there. Kitchen Experiences combines craftsmanship and upcycling with a contemporary interpretation of folkloric ornamentation. Recurring patterns, borders, botanical motifs and tendrils move across different materials and objects. Ceramics, glass and porcelain are painted, textiles embroidered and wood engraved. Stencils and linocut printing also open up creative possibilities. Useful objects become one-of-a-kind pieces; existing materials take on a new function and traditional design ideas find a contemporary form. 2CREATING AT YOUR OWN PACE Balcony Moments approaches the balcony as an extension of the living space and a personal retreat. Among plants, sunshine and fresh air, natural structures and materials set the tone. Braiding and weaving techniques meet handmade paper, wood, clay and found stones; sustainable materials are preferred for textile work. Visible structures, lines and grids are expressly allowed to look handmade. Glossy ceramic glazes, distinctive yarns and paper objects that play with light and transparency add accents. The focus is not on a flawless result, but on the conscious process of creating. NEXT TRADE FAIR DATES Creativeworld will continue to take place at the same time as Ambiente and Christmasworld at the Frankfurt exhibition centre. Creativeworld: 29th January to 1st February 2027 Ambiente/Christmasworld: 29th January to 2nd February 2027 21 CREATIVEWORLD 3MEMORIES SHAPE THE ROOM Bedroom Stories focuses on familiar objects, individual details and personal memories. Textiles provide an important foundation: they are embroidered, coloured, combined and embellished with personal motifs. Floral illustrations and pastel shades meet silk, boiled wool and fine cotton. Patchwork and ruffles made from second-hand fabrics pick up vintage elements and give existing materials a new purpose. Recurring motifs connect different textile pieces to form a personal overall composition. Experience Creativeworld Trends 2027 All three theme worlds share the idea of approaching design directly through everyday life: materials, techniques, memories and personal preferences shape the things with which we surround ourselves. At Creativeworld 2027, from 29th January to 1st February, this idea will be brought to life in the Trend Area in Hall 1.1 through exhibitor products. Guided tours of the Creativeworld Trends will take place on every day of the fair, showing trade visitors how materials, techniques and design ideas interact.
