December/January 2023/2024

Happy new year! This issue we are celebrating 100 issues of Craft Focus, that’s no mean feat! As ever, I’m so proud of the craft and hobby culture we’re all a part of. I love seeing grannies and teens alike pulling out their knitting needles on the train, the oh so cool hipster generation opening cocktail and crafting workshops (I think my invites have got lost in the post!) and the bread-and-butter hobbyists that pull out their craft supplies seasonally come Christmas, Easter or the six-week school summer holidays. You are the ones keeping our shops open and making home-made, cool. Over the past few years, it’s globally recognised that crafting is so good for mental health and has been said to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety, depression, loneliness and even dementia. So, here’s the next 100. I’ll still be here and I hope you will be too!

Here’s to a prosperous 2024!

Rachel

By the end of financial year 2023, approximately 340 events will have been held worldwide under the Messe Frankfurt Group umbrella, with more than 84,000 exhibitors and an estimated four million visitors. After a strong core business in 2023 with sales in excess of 600 million, the company is planning further growth in 2024 – a year in which a relatively high number of events are scheduled – and expects sales to be comparable with the previous record year 2019. Messe Frankfurt will increase its international competitiveness by investing in its worldwide core business, modern technology and sustainable event management.

AI is all around us and developing at an exponential pace and it's on the tip of everyone's tongue. AI's uses span the gamut of ground breaking and enabling, to its unauthorised use by machines plundering others' intellectual property with little or no regulation. Some may say plundering is a sanitised word for stealing the consequences of which threaten many with this sector. This rise on access to AI tools raises the question, will AI replace the traditional approach to designing are jobs on the line? Currently big business AI developers have written off the need for licensing so many ask, how will it be regulated?
