Tourism brings cheer to the British Economy As we enter autumn and the start of a new school year, tourist resorts around the UK are counting the profits after another booming staycation season. Chief amongst these chosen destinations for holiday makers was the South-West* of England, home to the most important regional event of the trade show calendar, Giving & Living (14th to 16th January, Westpoint, Exeter). Hospitality tech provider Zonal and CGA by NielsenIQ found in a survey of more than 2,000 UK consumers that 81 per cent of respondents intended to holiday in a UK hotel this year. 44 per cent avoided overseas trips due to cost-of-living increases, whilst 39 per cent are staycationing because they prefer to travel within the UK, up 12 per cent from 2022. Some 28 per cent said they’d stay in a UK hotel more than once in this year. Extremes of heat overseas have also made the more temperate British climate more appealing. It isn’t just Brits who are enjoying the treasures our native shores have to offer. VisitBritain/VisitEngland, reported that last year the UK welcomed 31.2m inbound visitors who spent £26.5bn. Spend per visit in 2022 was well up on 2019, partly due to a longer than average length of stay for visitors, especially in the first quarter of the year. The overall tourism forecast for 2023 is 37.5 million visitors, who are predicted to spend £30.9 billion, according to sources. This is an upgrade on earlier forecasts due to strong end of year results for 2022. VisitBritain CEO Patricia Yates said: “Our upgraded forecast is on the back of the stronger recovery we’re seeing, led by the USA with spending by American visitors up 42 per cent to a record £6 billion last year alone. Spending by visitors from our major European markets including France and Spain is also coming back strongly.” Looking ahead to next year, the forecast is very positive, with visitor numbers expected to have fully recovered to their pre-Covid volumes by the end of 2024. Giving & Living organiser, Mike Anderson of Hale Events said: “The British tourist trade is undoubtedly benefitting from the rise of staycations and continued enthusiasm for holidays closer to home. The restoration of visitor numbers from overseas is very positive news that bodes extremely well for the 2024 season”. 26 Scotland’s Trade Fair Autumn kickstarts busy trade show season Orders were plentiful, buyers were sourcing products and business was done at the revamped Scotland’s Trade Fair Autumn. Moved from its traditional late September date to 20th to 21st August, the Show proved to be a huge success attracting buyers from all over Scotland and overseas. With 115 exhibitors from gifts and homeware, to crafts and cards and jewellery to textiles, the new early date allowed retailers to source stock and place orders in advance of the English trade gift shows. Many retailers are running low in stock following a very busy summer tourist season with North American, Far Eastern and cruise ship visitors returning to Scotland in their droves. The new Craft Gallery proved a hit with a host of creative suppliers of jewellery, crafts and textiles, which is particularly popular with galleries, high end retailers and those looking for something a little different. The Launch Gallery for new young companies was full with some 17 exhibitors such as Muka Jewellery, The Ink Balm, LilyBee, Purple Sage Soap Company and Victoria Gordon Art, to mention just a few. Elsewhere buyers enjoyed seeing new exhibitors such as ENESCO, Academie, Lancaster & Gibbings, as well as connecting with Show favourites such as Glen Appin, Siabann, Maccessori, Artcuts and many more. Kirsty Gibson from ENESCO said: “This is our first time at Scotland’s Trade Fair and we’ve seen many new customers, especially ones that we’ve wanted to supply for years, so this allowed us to meet them face to face. The new timing is useful as we can show our Christmas stock and get ahead on sales for next year pre the January shows.” Mark Saunders said: “Confidence at Scotland’s Trade Fair Autumn 2023 leapt after a tough couple of years. The show saw an increase in exhibitors of 10 per cent and a huge increase of new exhibitors to the show. Products were of a very high quality and perfectly suited to gift shop buyers up and down Scotland and buyers responded with a vastly improved turnout on the last two years and placed orders confidently over the two days. Suppliers were delighted with the number of buyers they met at the show and the number and quality of orders they received. “The primary reasons for the increased market confidence was an earlier dateline for the show which moved from late September to August. This has meant buyers are able to place orders before the Autumn series of shows in England with more budget at their disposal. In addition, very strong overseas tourist numbers in Scotland have driven more people through gift shops. Finally, for overseas visitors the low pound means gift shop purchases are very good value. If these conditions continue through late summer and autumn, it bodes well for Scotland’s Trade Fair Spring in January.” That’s a wrap at Autumn Fair! Thousands of retailers including Sainsbury’s, Next, Dunelm, Boots, Ocado, Waterstone’s, Osprey London, Brand Alley, Tropic Skincare, Scribbler, Clintons, Oliver Bonas, Fenwick Ltd, Cardzone, Lakeland, M&S, Matalan, Pengethley Garden Centre, Aldi, Tesco, TJX Europe, Toys R Us, The Works, WHSMITH, and The Walt Disney Company, to name a few, converged at the NEC Birmingham from the 3rd to 6th September to shop the show for their next bestsellers across a huge breadth of product categories within Home, Gift and Fashion. Many enjoyed special features including the New Product Showcase and the Gift Of The Year Showcase which took centre stage in Hall 6 as well as an insightful and visual content programme on the Inspiring Retail Stage & Moda Catwalk. Daniel Mayhew, Event Director, Spring & Autumn Fair says, “Both the Gift Of The Year Showcase and New Product Showcase displayed some of the best products in show and buyers made a beeline for Hall 6 to discover the hottest designs for the season ahead. We really enjoyed creating a dedicated space to champion our Autumn Fair newcomers, and love to see how much our visitors enjoy these and the stimulating content we offer on the Inspiring Retail Stage & Moda Catwalk. Thank you to everyone who has attended and taken part in the show.” Naomi Pollard, Head of Publications at TrendBible offered vital insights into the Interior Lifestyle Trends for 2024 and an overview of four key Macro Trends that carry throughout the year, as well as 2024 Gifting and Celebration Trends offering visitors a head start on the key trends impacting consumers and the opportunities for celebration from Valentine’s Day through to Christmas. On Tuesday, circularity took centre stage. Helena MansellStopher, Founder of Products of Change, James George a Senior Strategist and Consultant in Circular Economy, and Mike Swain a Products of Change Ambassador for Packaging, opened with ‘Navigating the Future of Sustainability: Part 1’. The Products of Change team took the audience through significant changes to UK, Europe and Global legislation, from the UK’s new Packaging Tax, Europe’s Net-Zero pledge, the Digital Product Passport and 2024’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EDR). 28 What types of insurance is there for craft businesses? CraftCover.com is the first fully-automated insurance provider, designed especially for the Craft industry by a Craft hobbyist. Here’s a look into what the company offers... If you want to grow your craft business, you need to protect yourself with the right types of insurance. CraftCover provides businesses with bespoke, comprehensive craft insurance policies, no matter what craft you specialise in. Types of insurance for craft businesses Craft insurance can actually be tailored to your specific craft, including your equipment, end products and class (if you run a workshop). The different types of craft insurance include: • Public Liability Insurance and Product Liability Insurance • Craft Fair Insurance, or One-off Craft Fair Insurance • Craft Workshop Insurance Which types of insurance are important for craft businesses? Public Liability Insurance and Product Liability Insurance are typically the most important types of insurance for craftspecific businesses. You can even add on to these policies if you’re planning on heading to craft fairs or hosting workshops. Public and Product Liability Insurance Public Liability Insurance covers legal compensation costs that may arise due to a public injury as a result of your products or business operations. Product Liability Insurance protects you against the costs of compensation for personal injuries and loss or damage to a

29 PROFILE property caused by faulty products. Craft Fair Insurance Craft fair organisers will likely require you to have both of the above. CraftCover can cover you for an unlimited number of craft fairs over a yearly period, or the one-off craft fair insurance covers a three-day weekend if you’re only attending the one. Craft Workshop Insurance Craft workshop insurance will cover equipment and premises as a third party when you’re teaching classes to the public - this is because your duty of care in this scenario applies to third parties. Do I legally need craft insurance for my business? Craft insurance is not entirely a legal requirement, but it can be hugely important for the protection of your business. Some craft fairs will insist that you are insured before trading, and some event spaces won’t allow you to host a workshop if you aren’t insured. Not only this, but any issues that rise as a result of your products can cause significant financial issues to your craft business - not ideal when you want to grow! 42 Dream designs Meike Menze-Stöter from acufactum Ute Menze, talks to Craft Focus about their stunning designs Tell us a little bit about the company. Where are you based? When did the company start? acufactum is a trade and publishing company located in Iserlohn, North RhineWestphalia, in the west of Germany. The company was founded in 1989 and has been a family business ever since. Who founded the company and why? The company was initially founded by my mother, Ute Menze, as a retail business. Her hobby was cross stitch. Since she couldn’t source the materials close to home, she opened a needlework shop with a focus on embroidery How has the company evolved? The demand quickly increased and the premises had to be expanded. Ute Menze combined exclusive arts and craft with fine handicrafts and quickly became known beyond the city limits. In response to many requests, the retail business developed into a wholesale business. When I, her daughter, joined the company in the mid-nineties, the first books were published. Fine woven ribbons with their own designs were added to the embroidery ranges. Over the years, cross stitch became more and more associated with sewing and patchwork. The company’s own fabric collections with renowned illustrators have been popular worldwide for years now. What do you specialise in? Our main focus is on creating loving collections, which can be found in atmospheric needlework books, on fabrics, ribbons, patches, machine embroidery and cross stitch patterns Talk us through the current products you’re particularly excited about. Do you have a favourite? Michèle Brunnmeier Silke Schneider-Windt

43 PROFILE At the moment, we’re full of excitement about our new Christmas fabric collection. Every motif is put together with love and so we can hardly decide on a special favourite Hobby & crafts have boomed over the last two years! Have you noticed any new trends? Our design is not subject to any direct trend. The hand-drawn illustrations on which our products are based are timeless and transport us into fairytale worlds. How would you advise a retailer who is interested in stocking your products? We advise retailers to place our products in a loving environment. Just a few of our fabrics can create a new little world in the shop. As our motif fabrics often love a solo appearance, they can be combined well with the basic fabrics available in the shop in plain, striped, chequered or spotted. Our books with their lovely and expressive photographs give a direct example of use for the customers. What sets you apart from your competitors? Our small company size allows us to be very personal, flexible and spontaneous. This leaves us a lot of room for surprises. Do you visit any trade shows? Do you plan to visit any soon? Our most important trade show is h+h Cologne. We have a large stand there every year. What are you looking forward to most over the next year? We look forward most to the many fulfilling encounters in our beautiful handicraft world. It’s the people we meet through whom our everyday life is enriched and who give meaning to our work. We are grateful for the loyalty of our customers and the many positive feedbacks from you. We hope that we can continue our work in the coming year and that we can put our love into our products. What new products can we expect from you in the future? We’re currently working on the spring and summer collection. We won’t tell you anymore, but we’re already in love… ACUFACTUM info@acufactum.de www.acufactum.de Viktoria Egert Viktoria Egert Michèle Brunnmeier
