7 EDITOR’S LETTER On the cover Named after the Norwegian word for happiness, Lykke Crafts combine high quality materials and thoughtful design to produce beautiful, durable, happymaking knitting needles and crochet hooks. These beautiful needles and hooks are handcrafted and assembled in a scenic region of Kathmandu, Nepal. The production routines don’t rely on mechanized automation. Instead, products benefit from the skilled and graceful human touch of the skilled Nepalese craftspeople. The most popular needle is created from natural birchwood, which is infused with colour & resin using a proprietary process which gives them a smooth, silky feeling. The Blush line, shown on the cover, absorbs just enough pink to make the wood ‘Blush’. Please email gareth@knittingfever.com to learn how to stock needles & tools by Lykke Crafts. For more information, visit the website: https://knittingfever.com Create & Craft It was great to see so many familiar faces at the London Stationery Show. The north London location of the Business Design Centre always has such a buzz, with so many lovely boutiques lining the high street – and when the sun shines it’s all the better! To complement my visit, I have compiled a feature entitled ‘Beautiful Stationery’ showcasing some of my all-time desktop faves and some stylish designs that really caught my eye as well as a lowdown of what happened at the stationery event of the year. We also have a focus on Crafts Under £15 as buyers are wanting affordable ways to satisfy their crafting appetite in this cost-of-living crisis. As always, we share with you the newest products on the market as well as the latest industry and trade show news. Recently, we were lucky enough to chat to USAbased Knitting Fever, about their new range of needles; and not forgetting my exclusive interview with Roger Felton, Founder and MD of Differentiate Design. Do read all about his Pop-up Frame kits – affordable and stylish and about to revolutionise the way we frame our artworks. And lastly, please shout if there’s anything you’d like to see in the magazine, we love to hear from our readers. Enjoy the warmer days ahead and keep on crafting! On her appointment Kate said: “I can’t think of a more exciting time to be getting involved with this pioneering organisation which in so many ways is ahead of the curve in its focus, horizon scanning and leadership. It’s agility, reach and the breadth and nature of the membership ensure it is uniquely positioned. ACID is at a pivotal time in our history, twenty-five years from its inception and together with Kate, we look to the next period of campaigning, growth and engagement with passion. Set to take place during London Craft Week 2024, this threeday free to attend live event (8th –10th May 2024) will host the very best of arts, crafts, and design from all corners of the craft sector and will celebrate niche craftmanship that is in danger of being lost to time. In celebration of the launch of the exhibition, an esteemed panel of industry leaders held a Q&A and discussion compared by Piers Roberts at Shoreditch Town Hall, the location of Jay Blades presents Craftworks. As well as discussing the launch of the exhibition, the panel discussed the importance of British craftsmanship, with the exhibition hoping to generate business for crafts people whose skills are little known, due to being lost to mass manufacturing; as well as revitalise and attract the next generation of crafts people to future proof some of the world’s oldest crafts practices. TV presenter, Jay Blades MBE, said: “I’m excited to bring Craftworks to life here in London, as it will be the first of its kind. This event will not only reflect my principles of great design, education, and restoration, but most importantly will ensure the future proofing of the craft sector”. Held in the beautiful and iconic Shoreditch Town Hall, Craftworks will house four very distinct exhibition areas ensuring that the event is accessible for all crafts people. The venue is perfect for presenting the very best craftspeople and designer makers from across the UK and overseas. The exhibition hopes to attract sponsors of the various areas and is looking for businesses that share in the vision of championing great British craftmanship and design and sustainability. Jay Blades presents Craftworks has already attracted endorsement and support from some of the country’s premier craft organisations and charities, such as QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust), an art and craft educational trust created to sustain traditional British craftmanship; Cockpit, the London centre for excellence in craft; and Heritage Crafts, the national charity for traditional heritage crafts which works in partnership with the Government. This area is already almost fully booked with companies such as MUKA Jewellery, The Ink Balm (winner of Best Product Award at the Spring Show), Victoria Gordon Art (another Best Product Award winner), Designed by Islay, Rosana Exposito, Oir Soap and Wiktor Jewellery. Mark Saunders, Springboard Director says: “This date change came after serious consultation with exhibitors and retailers and now fits in better with the buying season. Offering retailers an earlier chance to get their hands on new products and Christmas stock is both beneficial to them and their customers. In addition, it aligns the two Scottish shows better with a six-month gap between them. This move has brought us many new exciting exhibitors and we hope new buyers will also attend. Tourism has enjoyed a strong start in the first four months of 2023. Scotland’s attractions are experiencing good footfall which is flowing into the gift shops. This bodes well for the shops, for the suppliers and for Scotland’s Trade Fairs.” Almost 90 per cent of the Show is already booked up with a good selection of gifts, homewares, jewellery and fashion accessories, making it a one-stop show for all types of retailers across Scotland and the north of England. With the participation of 280 companies from 41 countries, all of the industry’s big brands presented their products and services to the international trade audience again this year and ensured that the over 12,000 trade visitors went home with satisfied faces. In addition to gaining a comprehensive overview of the industry, the trade visitors were finally able to engage in a personal exchange at international level again this year at h+h cologne and this opportunity was exploited to the full. The industry association, Initiative Handarbeit e.V., underlined in Cologne the importance of h+h cologne’s role as a platform for the creative community and as a stimulus for new trends. Since in spite of the unabated trend towards handicrafts, the tense economic situation is also having an impact on the industry. In this way, the overall market for handicraft supplies in Germany was estimated to be around EUR 1bn in 2022, measured in end consumer prices. The market has thus declined compared to the previous years. Whereby, handicrafts were especially popular with the consumers during the lockdown, which led to the turnovers growing significantly in the years 2020 and 2021 (EUR 1.3 and 1.2 billion respectively). Which is why Hedi Ehlen, Chief Operating Officer of Initiative Handarbeit, found the wealth of innovative diversity displayed by the companies at h+h cologne this year all the more important: “Experiencing innovations and creativity together is vital for both the exhibitors and the visitors. h+h cologne is the best platform for this purpose. All of the people we talked to have emphasised the fact that the personal exchange is indispensable. This is why we are delighted that h+h cologne attracted such a convincing number of guests this year.” The motto of this year’s first-class and technically demanding event programme was ‘be creative. be unique’. Discussion rounds, lectures and workshops that provided the trade audience with plenty of inspiration and know-how were offered again on the Talk Sofa and in the course of many workshops. Here the focus lay on practice-oriented tips and information that the participants can utilise for their own business. h+h cologne next takes place, 22nd-24th March 2024.

26 Creativeworld exhibitors show support This year, 87 exhibitors at Creativeworld donated high-quality painting utensils and handicraft accessories to the Frankfurt Children’s Office. The donations in kind included everything a young artist’s heart could desire, from canvases and stationery to brushes, paints and pens, modelling clay, stamps and stickers. Eva Olbrich, Show Director of Creativeworld, and her team handed over the donations. This year, around 4,500 children in more than 50 children’s institutions and youth centres in the Rhine-Main region will benefit from the goods. With this fundraising campaign, Messe Frankfurt is committed to the education and creative promotion of children in the region. In this way, the company creates a bridge between the international trade fair, which is reserved for a trade audience only, and the creative users. Creativity is intelligence that is fun, Albert Einstein said. But you don’t have to be a genius to have fun in creating! As a trade fair for the creative sector, it’s important for us to promote the joy of doing things - also for the next generation”, explains Eva Olbrich, Show Director of Creativeworld. “It’s wonderful to see how many exhibitors from all over the world have taken part this year!”, Olbrich continues. Madeleine Michaelis, head of the Frankfurt Children’s Office, joins in the praise and points out: “Creative learning is really essential, especially for children. It creates a sense of achievement and brings joy. And making that possible is so important, because it also creates participation. That’s why we really appreciate Messe Frankfurt’s commitment to children and young people.” Creativeworld will continue to be held at the same time as Ambiente and Christmasworld at Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre, 27th to 30th January 2024.
