Craft Focus - June/July 2022 (Issue 91)

82 Essential supplies Haberdashery, Slipstitch, is located in Muswell Hill, right in the heart of London - the perfect place to spot trends and inspire crafters old and new. Owner, Rosie Fletcher tells us more… Tell us a bit about Slipstitch, when did you open and why? Slipstitch opened at the beginning of 2019. I took over an existing business called Fringe that also sold gifts but I refocused it on haberdashery. I’d been really ill in my twenties and hadn’t been able to work and as I recovered I started working here two afternoons a week. I realised I had a million ideas for what I’d do with a yarn shop so, against all common sense when you’re recovering from illness, I threw myself into owning a business and working full time. I’d always thought I’d like to run a yarn shop “one day” − turns out you can make “one day” come a lot sooner! Tell us a bit about your location We’re in lovely Muswell Hill in north London, 10 minutes up the road from where I grew up! Slipstitch is in a parade of shops just past the main bit of Muswell Hill and it’s got the nicest village feeling − there’s the library and a pub and some great cafes. How has business been since opening? Of course you’ve had Covid making you shut your doors… In January 2020 I thought that because I’d done a whole year, I’d seen all the ebbs and flows of the seasons, which of course got completely thrown out two months later! We were just very lucky to sell things that people could do in their own homes.
