85 PROFILE The cat’s whiskers Fat Cat Cross Stitch specialises in fun designs for younger crafters. Founder Debbie Wingfield reveals what the company has to offer retailers Tell us about Fat Cat Cross Stitch. After working in childcare for 20 years, I decided to give fulltime designing a go. I had already produced some small charts for fun, and had my work featured in a number of cross stitch magazines. I set up the kit-making side of the business, which was named after our then cat Jemima, who was rather ‘cuddly’ in shape! Talk us through your product range. We have two fun and contemporary children’s ranges. Suitable for younger crafters and beginners, the Easy Peasy collection is stitched on six-count binca using tapestry wool, while those with a little more experience can try the Sew Simple range, which is worked on 11-count aida. Each product comes with a full colour chart, instructions and all the materials needed to complete the image. Of course, each one can also be stitched by adults looking for a first kit or fun project. What are your bestselling kits? This seems to change quite regularly, but in our Easy Peasy range the tortoise is very popular. For Sew Simple, it has to be the unicorn! How often do you launch new products? In the past, new designs have not been released at set times, but at two or three points throughout the year. We have plans to be more structured from now on, so our customers know when new products are due! How would you advise a retailer who is interested in stocking your kits? An email is usually the best way forward. We will then send out information explaining how to open an account, and there’s a digital order form that’s quick and easy to use. We also welcome telephone enquiries. Do you exhibit at any shows? We exhibit at CHSI Stitches for trade customers and meet end users at The Knitting & Stitching Show each October. Sadly, other constraints mean we can’t do more shows. What’s coming up next? We are excited to be launching our Simple Stitches collection at the NEC in February. These designs are produced on 11-count aida using stranded cotton and are aimed at adults. We think there are a lot of people who find 14-count and above too small but would still like to stitch, so this will provide that opportunity. Although not included, each kit is sized to fit a 144mm aperture card and can be framed or made into a cushion cover or wall hanging. +44 (0)1432 760 733 fatcatcross-stitch.co.uk
