Craft Focus - Feb/Mar (Issue 71)

Simon Burns, managing director of ICHF Events, tells Craft Focus what this year’s CHSI Stitches has in store for retailers What can visitors expect from this year’s event? The last few years have seen some major developments in the show as we respond to the changing face of retail and the high street. As well as the unveiling of the 2019 Craft Report, visitors can expect to come away with insights from leaders in the industry that will greatly benefit their business. What remains central is the quality and breadth of exhibitors, from established major brands to new designers and start-ups launching their collections to the industry. The 2019 show will feature more than 100,000 products, many of which will be seen by the trade for the first time. Will there be any changes this year? When it comes to retail, we live in rapidly changing times, so this year’s show will focus on enabling visitors to respond to customer requirements and shopping behaviour. In- store experiences are increasingly important if retailers are to thrive, and CHSI Stitches has this at its heart. Visitors will be able to touch, try and learn about new products while receiving expert advice about experiential retail, attracting customers and inspiring them to spend. One of last year’s highlights was The Craft Report. What can we expect from this year’s presentation? The Craft Report was welcomed across the sector last year. It is the most comprehensive study of the industry by an independent research company. These aren’t just interesting numbers, they are findings that can fundamentally impact the way we do business, so I would urge everyone to make the time to hear this year’s analysis. CHSI Stitches is where many companies debut their latest products. Do you think we’ll be seeing some exciting new launches in 2019? Without a doubt. What’s interesting for us, having been in the industry so long, is seeing how the very latest in innovation and technology is driving the development of new and exciting products. Some provide an introduction to entirely new techniques, while others take existing crafts to a new level. There will also be some impressive new releases from the sector’s top designers and trendsetters. Our visitors value being among the first to get their hands on these hero products and this year will be no exception. What trends do you think will be making the headlines? We’re seeing sewing and knitting become bigger than ever. This is in part due to the mindfulness trend but also the growth in younger enthusiasts. It’s the perfect antidote to screen time and offers people the break forecasting the trends craft focus 49
