9 INDUSTRY NEWS Industry news Latest news from the craft industry Creativeworld supports young artists in Frankfurt Once again, Creativeworld exhibitors have donated a wide range of creative materials to the Frankfurt Children’s Office, supporting children in Frankfurt in their artistic endeavours. The materials, originally displayed at the international trade fair for hobby, craft, and artists’ supplies, are given a sustainable second life, benefiting childcare and educational institutions in need of painting and craft materials. During Creativeworld 2025, 30 percent of all exhibitors participated in the donation drive, providing high-quality painting and craft materials to the Frankfurt Children’s Office. From paints, canvases, and brushes to markers, stickers, stamps, and modelling clay – these materials are reaching children’s centres and youth institutions with limited access to creative supplies. With these donated resources, children can explore their imagination and create their very own works of art. Many of these creations will be showcased in the permanent exhibition Kinder Art! at the Frankfurt Children’s Office, as well as online at kinderbuero-frankfurt.de. “This donation campaign has become a cherished tradition at Creativeworld, highlighting the strong commitment of our exhibitors to social creative projects,” says Stefan Schopp, Show Director of Creativeworld, during the handover ceremony. “We’re delighted that so many of our exhibitors are contributing exactly what children need to express their creativity – vibrant paints, colourful animal-themed stamps, shimmering craft foils, and diverse modelling clay sets and a whole lot more.” The Frankfurt Children’s Office distributes the donations from 81 exhibitors to around 50 children’s and youth facilities in Frankfurt. Madeleine Michaelis, Project Manager of Kinder Art!, is enthusiastic about the Creativeworld initiative: “Creative expression is vital for child development. It not only enhances motor skills but also nurtures imagination and self-confidence. Thanks to the generosity of Creativeworld exhibitors, we can provide many children in Frankfurt with the opportunity to engage in artistic activities. In doing so, we stay true to Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to life by enabling children to actively participate in cultural and artistic experiences. The result is a portfolio full of countless small and large masterpieces – and, most importantly, bright, happy smiles.” Messe Frankfurt organises this donation initiative in partnership with the Frankfurt Children’s Office since 2010. The donated materials originate from exhibitors’ showcase assortments at Creativeworld 2025 – a meaningful contribution to resource conservation and a formidable example of sustainability in the DIY industry. Creativeworld will continue to take place at the same time as Ambiente and Christmasworld at the Frankfurt exhibition centre, Creativeworld: 6th to 9th February 2026.  Hobbycraft to close nine stores Hobbycraft confirms that, following a strategic review of the business it has announced a restructuring which will result in the closure of some of its loss-making stores, and unfortunately lead to redundancies for the colleagues who work there. The restructuring will also result in a number of management roles being made redundant across the store estate, along with redundancies in the Bournemouth based head office and the distribution centre in Burton on Trent. Nine Hobbycraft stores will cease trading by mid-July with the loss of between 72 and 126 jobs. A number of other stores in the store estate are currently part of an ongoing review process, the outcome of which is currently undecided. Any further store closures will be communicated to employees in due course. The retail sector has been under a great deal of pressure for a prolonged period and this restructuring is necessary to ensure a healthy future for Hobbycraft. Hobbycraft anticipates that the restructure will secure the future of at least 99 stores and more than 1,800 jobs. Hobbycraft CEO, Alex Willson, said, “Hobbycraft is the UK’s leading arts and crafts retailer, with a strong presence across the country and online, fantastic colleagues and loyal and engaged customers. For many, our stores are more than just arts and crafts supplies, they have become places for gaining crafting ideas and inspiration. Very sadly, the strength of our offering has not made us immune from the challenges faced by the retail sector in recent years. Closing stores is always a last resort and this has been an extremely difficult decision. Making these changes is sadly a necessary action to enable us to keep our doors open to crafters up and down the country.”

10 Modella acquires WHSmith Modella Capital, the specialist retail and consumer investment firm, has announced that it has acquired the UK High Street operations of WH Smith PLC. The acquisition covers c.480 stores on high streets, shopping centres and retail parks across the UK. WHSmith will retain its stores in airports, hospitals, railway stations and motorway service areas in the UK, as well as its significant operations in other countries. As part of the deal, the High Street stores will be rebranded as TGJones. They will keep the same products and services, including the Post Office and Toys “R” Us, and continue to trade as normal while Modella Capital works with the management team to define and execute a strategy to introduce new ranges and other offerings in the future. Modella Capital will acquire the High Street business based on an Enterprise value of £76 million. Commenting on this announcement, a Modella spokesperson said: “We are delighted to have been the successful bidder for one of the UK’s most iconic retail businesses. WHSmith stores are present in prime locations across many towns and cities across the country, and for more than two centuries have been an important feature in the UK retail landscape. Today, over one million customers visit these stores every week. Modella Capital believes strongly in the future of the high street, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to take a heritage brand and develop it further in the coming years. “TGJones feels like a worthy successor to the WHSmith brand. Jones carries the same sense of family and reflects these stores being at the heart of everyone’s high street. There will be a handover period in the immediate term, and it is very much business as usual whilst we work closely with the management team to define and execute a strategy to introduce new ranges and other offerings in the future. “This very welcome addition to our portfolio follows a number of recent acquisitions, including Hobbycraft, Create & Craft, Crafter’s Companion and The Original Factory Shop. Modella Capital now owns over 800 stores under its various brands, employing many thousands of dedicated colleagues, and we are thrilled to welcome the TGJones team to the Modella family.” Sean Toal, CEO of the new TGJones business, added: “Selling the High Street business has been a significant milestone for the WHSmith Group, and I am delighted that we have agreed a sale with Modella Capital who, I know, will be supportive new owners. I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve achieved as a High Street team and this next chapter presents exciting opportunities for growth, innovation, and continued success for the business and our talented colleagues. I have every confidence that under Modella’s leadership, the business will go from strength to strength, and I look forward to all that we can achieve together in the future.” Welcome back Gorjuss! Of particular note was a collaboration with Dulwich Picture Gallery on a highly successful range of ceramic buttons, brooches and drop earrings featuring the beautiful images on display at their current Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious exhibition. To create these ranges, selections were made from Tirzah Garwood’s stunning experimental marbled papers for which she was widely known during the 1930s. Filling an entire room at the gallery they make a magnificent display. The cropped images were fired onto the ceramic surface and were beautifully captured on the buttons and jewellery that are available at the Gallery gift shop. A collaboration with Jade Starmore, the well-known knitwear designer, has also been a highlight of the year. Jade used a variety of boat buttons from the bikes and boats range in a creative and cohesive way on her beautiful Breton pullover. The ever popular floral and Heritage buttons have also featured in her work and with more plans for the future it is proving a very exciting and creative experience resulting in a variety of new and varied button designs. Mary Goldberg of Stockwell Ceramics says: “It has been very satisfying to continue production of the bespoke drop earrings created in collaboration with the V&A Museum from their beautiful James Leman silk designs as well the William de Morgan earrings with designs taken from the wonderful tile collection which they hold. Other designs made for the V&A Museum, which have repeated again this year, were those created from the Iran Tiles in the Islamic Middle East collection and Art Deco jewellery adapted from Hilde Wagner-Ascher’s Tapestry-woven woollen carpets. This year so far has been an exciting series of creative adventures into bespoke designs and artistic collaborations.” Visit: www.stockwellceramics.com

The newly established council brings together a prestigious group of industry leaders who will offer expert insights and guidance to ensure these events remain at the forefront of packaging innovation, sustainability, and technology. The Easyfairs Packaging Council will advise on event content, address emerging trends, and provide valuable perspectives on industry challenges. The council comprises an esteemed group of professionals from across the packaging industry. Current members include Cory Connors, Director of Sustainable Packaging at Orora Packaging Solutions; and Szymon Klos, Senior Packaging Design Manager - Beauty & Wellbeing at Unilever, to name a few. By leveraging the collective expertise of the council members, Easyfairs will be better equipped to shape these events to address the evolving needs of the packaging sector. The EPC will convene once a quarter, with opportunities for smaller, more focused discussions, and members will serve a two-year term. Claire Shrewsbury, Director of Insights & Innovation at WRAP, said, “WRAP has been working on supporting efforts to reduce the impacts that packaging can have on the environment for around two decades. We work collaboratively across the supply chain and have a thorough understanding of the challenges and solutions, which I’m looking forward to bringing to the group.” “With the launch of the Easyfairs Packaging Council, Easyfairs is reinforcing its commitment to delivering world-class events that help shape the future of the packaging industry,” said Casey McHugh, Conference & Community Manager – UK & Global. “Collaboration is at the heart of innovation, and the EPC provides a unique opportunity to bring together industry experts from all corners of packaging. Their combined insights will ensure that our events continue to address the evolving needs of the industry, creating spaces for forward-thinking discussions and the exploration of new packaging solutions. The council will ensure that London Packaging Week and Packaging Innovations & Empack continue to be leading platforms for innovation, networking, and industry advancement.” With one eye on London Packaging Week 2025, you can now register your interest in this event, where luxury packaging meets cutting-edge innovation. 24 2025 Golden Scissors Awards Recognise Outstanding Achievement in the Crafts Industry Craft Industry Alliance is proud to announce the winners of the 2025 Golden Scissors Awards, recognising excellence in the crafts industry. The awards ceremony took place live on stage at h+h Americas. Five outstanding craft professionals were recognised in front of an audience of several hundred of their peers for their contributions to the industry. The craft industry includes world-class corporations and thousands of visionary small business owners whose never-ending creativity continually lifts the entire sector to new heights. The Golden Scissors Awards are an opportunity for the industry to acknowledge those who have offered outstanding leadership and innovation and made important contributions to the industry as a whole. Nominations for the awards opened in January of this year and were open for a month. In March, each nominee was considered individually and confidentially by a panel of seven judges nominated by the Craft Industry Alliance Board of Advisors. Judges for this year’s awards were Anne Merrow, co-founder of Long Thread Media; Lisa Woolfork, founder of Black Women Stitch and the Stitch Please Podcast; Vivika Hansen DeNegre, former content director for Golden Peak Media; Melanie Falick, author of Making a Life; and Liana Allday, general manager of Creativebug. Each award winner received a beautifully engraved, personalised pair of golden scissors made for them by Famore to honour their achievement. There were five categories of awards given this year: Emerging Leader, Innovation, Sustainability, Social Impact, and Lifetime Achievement. For Emerging Leader, the award went to someone who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in sustainable fashion and textiles. She’s committed to facilitating conversations on racial and environmental justice, ensuring that Black-led initiatives have visibility and support within the broader industry. Her namesake fashion brand, MAHDIYYAH, focuses on upcycling discarded textiles. She also serves in a leadership role at the Black Fiber & Textile Network. This year’s winner is Mahdiyyah Muhammad. For Innovation, the award winner is the creator of Pattern Projector, a free, open-source web-based app that allows users to project any digital sewing pattern quickly and easily. Described by users as ‘the software of our dreams’, Pattern Projector has exploded the adoption of projector sewing, making it accessible to all users regardless of income or location. Volunteers have now translated the software into nine languages in just its first year on the market. The winner is Courtney Pattison. For Sustainability, the award goes to the founder of Scraplanta, a non-profit creative reuse centre in Atlanta, Georgia. Scraplanta has collected and redistributed over 150,000 pounds of art and craft supplies to hundreds of teachers, students, artists, and makers across metro Atlanta. Not only is Scraplanta keeping art from the landfill, but they’re also helping crafters achieve financial stability by offering affordable materials. The winner is Jonelle Dawkins. For Social Impact, the award goes to the founder of Quilts For Survivors, an organisation that honours the survivors of the trauma suffered by indigenous children sent to residential schools. This organisation honours each survivor with a quilted hug. So far, Quilts for Survivors volunteers have made and donated over 6,300 quilts. A member of the Missanabie Cree First Nation who is affectionately known as “the quilter with a heart of gold,” the award goes to Vanessa Genier. The Lifetime Achievement award winner is someone who started his career in the crafts industry in 1981, winding yarn in his wife’s yarn shop. After becoming a sales rep for yarn companies, he purchased inventory from one and started his own distribution company, Bryson Distributing. He travelled as a rep for 20 years while building Bryson into a leading accessory and yarn distributor catering to independent retailers. Described as a champion of the underdog and someone who relishes the opportunity to serve as a mentor and help those in need, the Lifetime Achievement award goes to Jim Bryson. Craft Industry Alliance co-founder and president, Abby Glassenberg, says of this year’s awards programme, “It’s truly an honour to be able to present these awards. Now in its second year, this programme has become a highlight of our year. I’m incredibly impressed by the dedication and hard work of our winners, each of whom demonstrates how craft and creativity can change lives.” The Golden Scissors Awards will be given annually each spring at h+h americas. Nominations for next year’s awards will open in January 2026.

28 With love from Moldova Anastasia Luca-Brasoveanu, designer and company manager at LetiStitch Ltd talks to Craft Focus about her successful trade, needlework company Tell us a little bit about the company. Where are you based? When did the company start? LetiStitch is a cross stitch brand company, established in the United Kingdom. Founded in 2019, this project is a wholesale business. We’re working in collaboration with Luca-S Company from the Republic of Moldova, our kits are manufactured at the Luca-S factory and provide the highest quality. What’s your background and why did you start the company? I’ve been involved in the world of cross stitch since I was a child. I was designing small patterns, cross stitching with my mom and helping to manufacture the kits. Basically, I was always around my parents’ business. I’ve created a collection of greeting cards, pillowcases, Christmas stockings, bags, rugs and more. Then after moving with my family to England, I decided to launch my own brand LetiStitch. How has the company evolved? I’m the founder of the LetiStitch brand, but I have an entire team helping me. We were working with a few select customers, but after one year we’ve extended the number of clients. We export our kits to more than 50 countries and we try to introduce our articles on new sales markets. We’ve also launched our online shop: www.LetiStitch.com What do you specialise in? We specialise in counted cross stitch kits, which contain all the necessary materials in order to finish an embroidery. A kit contains instructions and symbol key, white and black charts or partially coloured charts. It includes several cardboards with different threads (Luca-S, Anchor, Madeira, DMC), needles, a piece of fabric Aida of 14, 16, or 18 count
