Applications for the Nation's Favourite Businesses has opened as part of the upcoming celebrations of this year's Small Business Saturday UK, taking place on 5 December 2026. The Nation's Favourite Businesses (NFB), first introduced last year to spotlight the UK's vibrant small business community, will replace the long-running SmallBiz100, a celebration of Britain's most inspiring entrepreneurs as part of the official countdown to Small Business Saturday UK - a grassroots non-commercial campaign, originally founded by American Express in the U.S. in 2010, and the principal supporter in the UK.

Britain's local retailers are powered by loyal regulars who generate them up to five times more annual revenue as they typically return to a business 11 times throughout the year, according to research from Square, the global technology company. For high street retailers specifically, the Square Local Economy Report reveals that UK consumers most often visit their local retailers and shops, over and above cafés, restaurants and beauty salons, with 70% shopping locally at least weekly. This is the highest rate across the four countries Square surveyed, compared to the US, Australia and Canada.

Britain risks weakening its economy by taking small businesses for granted, according to Nigel Botterill, who is launching a new national campaign to put them back at the centre of the conversation. Botterill, founder of Entrepreneurs Circle, is behind UK Small Business Week, a nationwide initiative taking place from 1–7 June that will bring together communities, entrepreneurs and local leaders in a coordinated push to recognise and support the businesses that form the backbone of the UK economy.

The Giftware Association has joined the Bank of England and a coalition of UK trade associations as part of the Genesis Initiative, presenting new evidence on trading conditions and confidence across the gift, home and stationery sector. After three successful trade fair days, h+h cologne, which was held at the fair grounds of Koelnmesse from 20th to 22nd March 2026, came to a close on Sunday. With nearly 300 exhibitors from 40 countries and around 11,500 trade visitors from 72 countries, the event provided a boost to the international textile and handicrafts sector. Many exhibitors and trade visitors gave the event a very positive review whilst still on site, highlighting its role as the industry's most important international platform. They also emphasised the high calibre of visitors from both Germany and abroad.
