The Biscuit Factory Foundation is profiling up and coming talent with its new Open Contemporary Young Artist Award this spring.
This national open call is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for artists aged 35 and under, working in a range of media, to submit work that will be considered for inclusion in a group exhibition at The Biscuit Factory – the UK's largest independent art, craft and design gallery.
The Biscuit Factory Foundation is the gallery's charitable arm, which aims to nurture and develop the practice and appreciation of the visual arts in the North-east of England through an engaging and varied programme of creative opportunities.
The exhibition, which will run from 18th May to 20th August 2017, will provide a commercial platform; with the overall winner receiving a cash prize of £1000 and the opportunity for a solo show at the Newcastle-based gallery. The public will also vote for their People's Choice Winner, who will be awarded £250. All work in the exhibition will be available to buy, with 10 per cent of proceeds going back to The Biscuit Factory Foundation to contribute towards the facilitation of future projects. The Open Contemporary Young Artist Award closes on 2nd April 2017.
Rachel Brown, General Manager of The Biscuit Factory says: “Building on the success of our first Open Contemporary Portrait Award last year, we decided that this year's prize would focus on young, emerging artists. Artists can submit original work across the mediums of fine art, photography, handmade prints, sculpture, glass, ceramics, textiles or jewellery, and can choose the style, genre and technique they employ. We can't wait to see what new talent we'll uncover this year!”
