Maped Helix's incoming Managing Director believes he is joining the upwardly mobile company at the perfect time, as the stationery manufacturers gain an increasingly strong foothold in the industry.
Gray Richmond, former Managing Director of Jumbo Games, will bring his expertise from the toy world into a market with a number of similarities. The 40 year-old from Hertfordshire will base himself from Maped Helix's Kingswinford head offices in the West Midlands each week and has already identified a number of opportunities for both the Maped and Helix brands.
“I've got a really positive first impression of the business and feel there's a lot of great work from which to build on. There are a number of similarities between the toy and stationery industries and various peaks in the year that you need to manage, which represent a large part of the business. Such peaks can make or break a year. Products in both industries also feature relatively low price points and high moving products and in addition, fashionable and seasonal trends need to be taken into account and planned for long in advance,” comments Gray Richmond.
Gray believes the contrast between Helix's more traditional products and Maped's innovative ranges represents the perfect balance for the business. “The marketplace is certainly becoming more and more competitive, while the pressures that retailers face can cause pressure for ourselves. But the sheer diversity we boast, not to mention the strength of both brands, means we're equipped to perform well and offer products that really resonate with customers.”
Gray identified the writing instrument category as an area of potential growth, whilst acknowledging a need to be strong in online sales. “It isn't just about selling more online, but ensuring that our products look and feel desirable and memorable to the end user. We can count on large international businesses as customers as well as individual entrepreneurs working from home. That's how broad we are. We're market leaders in a number of categories and it's my job to ensure we stay there.”
