UK's unique contemporary crafts venture gets second investment boost from Arts Council England
Craft Finder, the national online contemporary craft promotion venture, is celebrating a major vote of confidence today as Arts Council England announced a grant of nearly £30,000 to reach out to new audiences.
Janet Paske, 48, founder and director of Craft Finder, said: “This support from the Arts Council will really help us put Craft Finder on the map.” “The grant will pay for a new part-time worker who will develop relationships with contemporary craft lovers and galleries, fairs and others who bring the work of designer-makers to the public's notice.”
Craft Finder launched in 2012 and has since been steadily building its profile, attracting leading designer-makers. It connects them with lovers of contemporary craft who can now find over 600 galleries, exhibitions, fairs and studios across the UK, from the Scillies to Shetland and from Haverfordwest to Southwold. Janet said: “We are a unique initiative and provide a resource for everyone who loves contemporary craft, from the novice to experts such as gallery managers. “We want everyone to share in the excitement of finding something they love, wherever they are in the UK. Craft Finder enables people who love craft to find, visit and enjoy beautifully made contemporary craft for real.”
More than 200 selected designer-makers of outstanding quality have already joined. Janet Paske says: “We are delighted that Arts Council England has recognised our endeavours and can see that we are meeting a need for contemporary craft lovers. Research shows that new customers like to feel, see and touch a maker's work before buying and that's where we come in. We make it nice and easy for people so they can do just that. The investment shows that Arts Council England has confidence we are succeeding and recognises the hard work that is still to be done before we are fully self-sustaining.”
“The investment boost from Arts Council England, a grant of £29,734, will help develop Craft Finder audiences. Most of the funding will pay for a part-time member of staff as well as extend the range of promotion we do. This year, for example, we will now be able to have a stand at Art in Action. The postholder will be based at Craft Finder's offices in Sheffield's Persistence Works.”
