Craft Focus - Aug/Sep (Issue 68)

project craft focus 99 Made with 3-ply cotton rope and a shiny brass ring, this plant hanger is a playful variant of the first one I made on a spring afternoon in my mum’s kitchen. Although I’ve altered this pattern again and again through the years, I still appreciate the sweet simplicity of my initial design. These days it lives in my upstairs bathroom, holding aloft a philodendron that doubles as an audience for my shower-singing sessions. THEKNOT Macramé is having a moment right now. Artist and interior designer Emily Katz reveals how to make this on-trend knotted plant hanger Vital statistics Finished size: 38” long, empty, from top of ring to bottom of fringe Knots and techniques: Half square knot (HSK), square knot (SK), sinnet of square knots, half square knot spiral, alternating square knots (ASK), alternating rounds of square knots Supplies: 99’ white 3-ply cotton rope (5mm diameter), 1¾” brass ring Cut list: Six 16.5’ lengths Beginning your plant hanger 1 Hang the ring on a secured hook or an S-hook hung from a supported dowel. If you have a swivel clip, fasten it to the ring before hanging. 2 Thread all the rope through the ring, bringing the ends together so the centre of each length rests on the ring. Arrange them so they lie as flatly and neatly as possible. 3 Find the two outermost cords coming out of the back of the ring. Work two SKs, using these two cords as your working ropes and all remaining cords as a filler.
